What is Buy With Confidence?
Buy With Confidence is a scheme now operating in over 50 local authority areas, which gives members the ability to say they are ‘Trading Standards Approved’ and to use the Buy With Confidence logo. Devon & Somerset Trading Standards operates the scheme across the two counties.
BWC is a signal to customers that a company is open, honest and operates within trading law, as well as that they can expect good customer service. It’s also independent, which customers tend to trust, and helps cut through the often confusing number of schemes run by different trade bodies.
Are There Any Other Perks?
By becoming a member you will get access to Trading Standards expertise, who can help advise you on how to keep inside the law and offer superior customer service. This can be particularly beneficial for small, growing businesses that may need help and advice but don’t have a lot of money.
Your business will go on the BuyWithConfidence.gov.uk website, where thousands of potential customers can find you. We also regularly promote the scheme, so that consumers are aware of BWC and know exactly what it means.
Which Sort Of Businesses Can Benefit?
Most businesses can benefit from BWC, as it’s a visible signal that you are a company to trust. It can be particularly useful for businesses in trading areas that consumers use infrequently – such as plumbers or electricians – where potential customers may not feel they know how to choose between competing traders, but want someone they feel they can have confidence in. Can Anyone Join?
As long as you’ve been trading for at least six months, anyone can apply, but not everyone will be immediately accepted. In order to keep the scheme legitimate and so that it can genuinely mean something to consumers, all businesses applying will be thoroughly checked before being admitted.
How Will My Application Be Checked?
We will check things such as whether you are committed to good customer service, whether you operate within consumer law, that you have appropriate insurance, and that you do not cold call people. If there are any problems, we can advise you on what you need to do to sort it out, so that you can achieve Buy With Confidence status.
If your business involves going into people’s homes or having regular contact with children or vulnerable adults, we may also ask you (and any of your employees or unsupervised subcontractors) to agree to a criminal records check.
We take a rigorous approach so that when you are admitted, you know that being able to display the BWC logo really means something and that it is a scheme that consumers can and do trust. You can find out much more about the terms of membership here.
What Do I Get When I’m Admitted?
As well as being included on the member register at BuyWithConfidence.gov.uk, you will receive a membership certificate that you can display in your premises. We can supply you with window and vehicle stickers, as well as an electronic version of the logo to use on your website and promotional materials. You’ll also have a contact within Trading Standards you can get in touch with for support and advice, and we’ll send you our regular newsletter.
How Long Does Membership Last For?
Membership needs to be renewed every year, at which time you are confirming that you continue to comply with all scheme requirements. You may also be periodically audited by Trading Standards to make certain you are abiding by the BWC rules. Advice can be given to help ensure you do not lose your Buy With Confidence status.
How Much Does It Cost?
