Trading Standards is here to help ensure that consumers across Devon and Somerset can have confidence that they’ll be treated fairly and within the law by businesses. We’re constantly checking traders and following up on possible breaches in legislation, so that customers hopefully won’t be faced by problems with goods and service.
However we realise that sometimes things go wrong and consumers feel they’ve gotten a raw deal. Unfortunately while we can’t deal with consumers directly, we work with the Citizens Advice Consumer Service, who can advise you of your rights and what action you can take against a trader.
You can contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 or 0208 1850710, or via this online form.
They will then pass your complaint on to us. We will only contact you further ourselves should we be able to investigate your case and require further information from you. We will not normally provide feedback on the outcome of complaints or investigations. We can only deal with the criminal side of any problem, which may mean you will have to take civil action yourself if you believe a trader owes you compensation. If you want more info on the difference between civil and criminal law, you can find that here.
Product Safety Recalls
Occasionally unsafe products get onto the market. When these are identified a product safety recall is issued. You can find an up to date list of the latest recalls here.
Understanding Your Rights
You can often head off an issue before it occurs simply by knowing what businesses and consumers are legally entitled to expect, and also what the warning signs are for a scam or unfair practice. You can find lots of up to date information in our Understanding Your Rights area, which includes info on a range of subjects, from latest scams to look out for to your rights when buying a second-hand car.
Getting Help & Helping Yourself
If you have a problem and feel you to need to take things further, our Getting Help & Helping Yourself section can help you write an effective letter of complaint, as well as tell you about the process involved in taking a trader to the small claims court.
Buy With Confidence
Devon and Somerset Trading Standards operates the Buy With Confidence scheme. Traders who are part of the scheme have been vetted by Trading Standards to ensure they operate within the law and treat customers fairly. You can find out more about the scheme and find an approved trader here.
Feel free to explore, as the more you know the less likely you are to fall victim to a scam or have a problem with a business.
