Registration & Licensing
Petroleum, Diesel and LPG
Individuals and companies who store and dispense petroleum spirit, either commercially or otherwise, are required by law to be licensed. In Devon & Somerset this is handled by the local trading standards service. Licences are issued for 1, 2 or 3 years.
We can carry out premises searches to establish the history of a site and to check if there has previously been a petroleum store there, as well as that it has been correctly de-commissioned. There is usually a charge for this service.
We check garage forecourts to ensure people receive the correct amount of fuel when filling up and that the site is being run safely.
Information for Consumers
If you have a complaint about the amount of fuel you have received when filling up at a local garage, please contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506 or 0208 1850710.
Your local district council deals with the storage of petroleum in containers for workplace use or at domestic premises.
Information for Retailers
If you intend to redevelop your existing site or develop a new petroleum site you must contact us to obtain the necessary permissions and then the licence. Permission to develop a site will only be granted after we have carried out a full inspection and are happy that the area is suitable and safe.
